India and Ireland have more in common than a first letter in English. Both nations share a history of British colonialism, colonial-induced famines, political hunger striking, an independence that came with the price of a bitterly divisive partition, and continuous waves of emigration to elsewhere. But while there are historical resonances between the countries, their respective film industries could not be more distinct. India has an output of roughly 800 films per year in multiple languages and styles, while Ireland has had years when only one film got made. Taking into account these vast differences, this course will look closely at the flows of influence among India, Ireland, the US, and the UK, addressing how each country’s cinema contends with the world dominance of Hollywood and how each imagines the nation and its diaspora. We will study the relationship between language and representation (looking at films in Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi, English, and Irish/Gaelic), the stakes film has in imagining gender and sexuality in relation to national identities. Screenings include: The Crying Game, The Terrorist, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Once, Bend It Like Beckham, Hunger, and The Legend of Bhagat Singh.
