Rosa Alcalá: Translating Cecilia Vicuña

Wednesday, November 6, 2019 7:30 PM EST
Art & Design Building, Gillespie Gallery

Poet and Translator Rosa Alcalá will speak about her translation of both the performances and poetry of writer and artist Cecilia Vicuña. Her recent translation publications include two edited volumes: Spit Temple: The Selected Performances of Cecilia Vicuña (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2012), and Cecilia Vicuña: New & Selected Poems (Kelsey Street Press, 2018).

Don Mee Choi, herself a poet, translator, and performance artist, wrote, of Alcalá's translation of Vicuña's performances: “Spit Temple, woven by the brilliant hands of Rosa Alcalá, is an enormous cloud, the enormity of which is unspeakably moving and beautiful. The two shaman artists, Vicuña and Alcalá, offer us the rarest of rare salve for all of Earth’s memories.”
