In this course, students learn practices in close analysis of literary texts across a number of genres. The class practices how to clarify and expound upon works through critical written interpretations of the readings. We read and discuss works; learn to construct arguments and theses; and write effective research papers on themes and issues in the literature. Close analysis of literary texts, including but not limited to poetry, fiction, and drama. Emphasizes reading and writing exercises to develop basic interpretive skills. Examines figurative language, central ideas, relationship between structure and meaning, narrative point of view. Offered by English. Limited to three attempts.
