Chaucer Doth Tweet

Geoffrey Chaucer is the most famous English writer of the Middle Ages. His works have influenced countless authors, shaped the English language we speak every day, and, yes, even inspired a Twitter feed. Given Chaucer’s central place within the English literary canon (and his tendency to write himself into his texts), we perhaps shouldn’t be surprised to learn that the word ‘celebrity’ appears in English for the first time in one of Chaucer’s works. But as Chaucer himself wrote, fame is fickle. Why, then, is this medieval poet still so popular today? In this class, we will read a varied selection of Chaucer’s poetry, ranging from romance to farce, dream vision to satire, to help us understand Chaucer’s transhistorical appeal, and to evaluate his place in the literary canon for ourselves. Chaucer’s vivid cast of characters will also introduce us to the vibrant culture of late medieval England, giving us the opportunity to examine medieval insights into many themes, including class, gender, education, religion—and, of course, fame.

In order to appreciate Chaucer’s wit for ourselves, we will be reading his works in their original Middle English. No prior experience with Middle English is required, and ample time will be dedicated to learning how to read and pronounce Middle English. Students will leave this course with a comprehensive knowledge of Chaucer’s works as well as a deeper understanding of the history of the English language.
