Composition, linguistic markers of rhetoric and genre

Laurie Miller teaches first-year writing for multilingual writers (ENGH 123, ENGH 100) in the English Department as well as English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses for Mason's international students in the Gateway program.  

Prior to this, she was a faculty member in Mason’s INTO Mason, English Language Institute (ELI) and the Center for International Student Access (CISA).  While her primary focus has been on working with multilingual writers, she has also worked with writers who first language is English in both academic and business settings. Dr. Miller has contributed to World Bank writing style guides, consulted on an individual basis with professionals at United Airlines, and worked as an abstractor of medical papers.

With degrees in biology, English literature and linguistics, and Writing and Rhetoric, she understands the needs placed on writers in diverse genres and writing situations. 

Her current work and research beyond teaching includes the integration of generative AI tools and virtual reality in writing instruction.
