With a focus on crime fiction written by women and featuring female detectives, detective-figures and even criminals, this course traces both the evolution of crime fiction from the first modern detective story by Edgar Allan Poe and also the evolution of women’s representation in this genre—both as authors and as characters, taking the tradition in fresh directions. Additional readings will provide critical perspectives and social, cultural, and historical background.
