While the book review may seem a fairly staid form of writing (and perhaps a neglected one today; just visit the comments section of any review at the Washington Post’s website to hear the crickets), it can also prove provocative—for the writers reviewed and the publishers behind them (ecstatic or offended), for other critics (often in vigorous disagreement), and for the readers themselves (who might find their perspectives on a work enhanced—or might dismiss differing opinions entirely). In recent years, the landscape for book reviews has changed immensely, with the decline of book review sections in newspapers and other traditional media outlets, the rise of literary blogs, podcasts, and other venues covering books and writing, and then the concurrent rise of reader reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, and elsewhere. This course seeks to explore the book review as a form (with many forms), the breadth and shifts of the landscape of writing on literature, and the market for book reviews and reviewers—like you, hopefully, since the course also seeks to balance the academic and the practical, pairing attention to craft with exploration of publication possibilities.
