This course surveys some of the major genres, authors, and texts of what is now called the ‘Western Literary Tradition.’ But as we read some of the most influential works written during the period stretching from ancient Greece to the Renaissance, we will also study how and why the idea of ‘Western literature’ was created in the first place. Why did classical, medieval, and early modern authors across Eurasia all claim to live during a ‘renaissance’? What’s at stake when we make such claims? By examining the cultural assumptions about the past embedded in Western literature, we’ll develop a better understanding of how contemporary concerns shape the interpretation of literary history.
