ENGH 511 - 001: Literature of Bubonic Plague

Many have compared life during the COVID-19 pandemic to the experience of the bubonic plague in the fourteenth century. (Social distancing? Check. Quack medicine? Check. Fleeing to the suburbs? Check.) What are the value of such comparisons? How did medieval writers represent and respond to the plague? And how might their insights help us predict the long-term impacts of COVID-19 on society? This course will tackle those questions. By examining a wide range of works from fiction to chronicles to visual art, we will study how medieval writers depicted the experience of pandemic and imagined what might lay beyond it. We will also use modern critical theory to explore how collective trauma shapes cultural production. Readings may include works by Boccaccio, Chaucer, and Langland.
