What work are you doing now?

I support the Department of Education, Office of Federal Student Aid, providing enterprise architecture subject matter consulting to the technology office. Another primary role of mine is to implement engineering related boards and working groups to support the agency’s overall information technology governance process.

What do you like about it?

I show my clients how they can quickly improve the outcome of the IT services supporting their business. This requires me to constantly be up on the latest potential strategies for improvement. I am excited about governance and appreciate showing clients how they can improve their business processes and improve their IT performance. I enjoy working directly with upper level executives as well as developers to provide clear and concise information.

How did your degree in the college prepare you to do this work?

I use my non-fiction writing and editing skills to facilitate communication between the business users and the developers of the systems I support.

What advice would you give current students about developing their careers?

The most important thing I learned about finding a satisfying job is that the type of degree I earned had less impact than my willingness and ability to learn. My advice is to find an industry you are passionate about, and then learn everything, take advantage of all the training you can. Industry experience and current certifications are what help me to continue to grow and succeed.
