What work are you doing now?

I am currently working for a lifestyle/events magazine called Regional News, in Wellington, New Zealand. I write the majority of the articles for the publication and provide input on features and layout.

What do you like about it?

In my position I have learned an immense amount about fascinating cultural events through writing about them. I have had the opportunity to attend and write about symphonies, ballets, operas, poetry readings, and much more. I have also been able to interview many people involved in these productions and the arts in general. I have my own editorial column in the publication, which is rewarding. It is a spectacular feeling to pick up on the pulse of a community and write a column expressing ideas and issues in my own words – it is even better to hear from people that they enjoyed reading it or that they could identify with the writing.

How did your degree in the college prepare you to do this work?

At Mason, I learned how to write in a way that is hopefully insightful and interesting. Through studying literature, I have learned to study people, which is essential for a journalist. After all, I tell the stories of others.

What advice would you give current students about developing their careers?

Follow what you love. If you are passionate about literature, go for it!  It may feel at times that following your passion is not practical but an English degree opens up so many doors. Try to get out there and connect with others who share your passion and through those connections find the doors you want to go through.
